Big Bend National Park

An Adventure-Packed Spring Break for the Family

First things first, you need to book your stay at one of the park’s campsites, lodges, or cabins, which are very convenient and budget-friendly. The Chisos Basin Lodge is the most appealing option, as it is located in the heart of the park and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The rooms are cozy and comfortable, and you will wake up to the sounds of nature. On the other hand, if you prefer to camp outdoors, there are several campsites to choose from, but keep in mind that they fill up fast, so make sure to make your reservations in advance. On this trip we booked too late and ended up in a motel in Terlingua.

Santa Elena Canyon

Now that you have your accommodation sorted, let's explore the park's activities. Big Bend is a hiker's paradise, boasting over 200 miles of hiking trails, each offering a unique experience. For a family-friendly hike, we recommend the Santa Elena Canyon Trail, which is an easy two-mile roundtrip hike that takes you through the magnificent Santa Elena Canyon. You will be stunned by the towering canyon walls and the magnificent Rio Grande River. This was a great and easy hike that all of our kids were able to do.

A Night to Remember

One of the best ways to unwind after an adventurous day is to stargaze at the park's International Dark Sky Reserve. Big Bend is renowned for its clear skies and lack of light pollution, making it the perfect spot to observe the stars. You can even attend a stargazing party with park rangers where they will provide telescopes and guide you through the night sky.
