A Day Trip to Lake Naivasha
A Magical Experience
Nairobi, Kenya, is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the African region. But sometimes, you need to take a day off and enjoy a scenic destination. Lake Naivasha is a perfect gateway destination just 90 minutes away from Nairobi. The lake is home to a large population of hippos and is also popular for bird watching. During our day trip, my husband and I got to experience some of the most enchanting moments we will undoubtedly cherish forever.
The Great Rift Valley
Our Day Trip began with an early morning departure from Nairobi. We took the scenic route, and our first stop was the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint. From the viewpoint, we were able to enjoy an amazing panoramic view of the valley from an altitude of 2400m. This breathtaking view left us in awe and offered a quick nature-based pit stop to take in the sceneries of Kenya.
Boat Ride
Our second stop was Crescent Island, accessible only by boat. We hopped onto a boat (with some snacks and a beer) and began a 40-minute boat ride to the Island.
Crescent Island
The Island is a sanctuary for animals like giraffes, zebras, wildebeests that roam freely on the Island. We took a walking safari on the Island and got to walk among friendly giraffes and acacia trees. Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen for this part.
Hippo Funeral
The highlight of our day trip was witnessing what appeared to be a hippopotamus funeral. It was a sad and unexpected moment. One of the hippos died, and other hippos gathered around it. They appeared to be mourning the loss of their fellow hippo. The observation gave us a glimpse of the social behaviors of these animals, and we felt privileged to witness such a magical moment.
Lake Naivasha is a testament to the natural beauty of Kenya. With its scenic surroundings, abundant wildlife, and friendly people, it is an ideal escape from the city. The day trip to Lake Naivasha was an incredible experience that left an imprint on our hearts. It was an opportunity to rejuvenate and connect with nature. It is a destination every traveler looking to experience Kenya’s magic should include in their itinerary. On your next trip to Nairobi, I urge you to take a day trip to Lake Naivasha and create magical experiences for yourself.
